Northern elders have expressed support for Igbo presidency in 2023 and tasked the All Progressives Congress and therefore the Peoples Democratic Party to zone its presidential tickets to the South East.
The elders say their demand follows the necessity for all regions of the country to be treated equally within the political affairs of the state.
In a statement by its National Coordinator, Engr. Zana Goni and therefore the National Women Leader, Hajia Mario Bichi, the Coalition of Northern Elders for Peace and Development affirmed that Igbos are marginalized within the political scheme of things within the country.
It, however, appealed to the APC and therefore the PDP to feature candidates of southeast extraction in 2023 to take care of the culture of the rotational presidency between the North and South, which it claimed has doused political tension in Nigeria within the past.
The group promised to support Igbos and tasked other zones within the country to try to do the same following their long quest to supply a president.
‘‘Buhari is from the North, the proper thing is that after his eight-year tenure, the subsequent president should come from Southern Nigeria and since South West and South-South have occupied the office within the current dispensation, the South East is next in line within the spirit of the rotation principle, fairness, equity, and justice.”
The elders said the move will foster national unity and convey an end to the bitterness of the Nigeria-Biafra war, which has lingered for 50 years since the top of hostilities.
The Northern Elders lauded South East leaders for not taking cessation as an option despite the activities of Nnamdi Kanu, the self-proclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, which it accused of attempting to destabilize Nigeria’s unity by hiding under the delayed Igbo presidency.
If all the main geopolitical zones within the country and particularly the main ethnic groups within the country have all been presidents then altogether fairness, justice, and equity, we should always be watching the South East supply the president.
“There is not any denying the very fact that the Igbos have contributed greatly to the event of this country. it’s time for us all to reciprocate their good gestures through mass support for the subsequent president to emerge from the South East. this is the time for it, the statement further said.
‘‘We are posing for a Nigerian President of South-East extraction. We aren’t asking Nigeria for “Igbo President because which will amount to asking Nigeria to possibly alter geo-political-zones-based rotation arrangement for Presidency in Nigeria”.
The elders further tasked Ohanaeze Ndigbo to succeed in out to great Igbo politicians and leaders of other geo-political zones and interest groups for support for a South-East president, noting that the creation of six geopolitical zones was to assist streamline the way the country was structured.
“The Northern elders desire to face on this zoning arrangement to form some extent on 2023 Presidency that’s of grave importance to South-East geo-political zone especially and Nigeria generally,” they said.
